About Alec the Geek Technology
ATG Tech is a small local boutique IT consultancy run by, …. Alec! So really the question is “who is Alec and why does he appear to speak in the third person?”.
We’ll let him answer that:
I’ve been in IT over 40 years – I started in London (Britain) programming ATM devices, and since then I’ve been lucky enough to work around the world doing lots of interesting things with computers. When I worked in the Middle East I met my wife and we now have two adult children. Recently we moved to the Mornington Peninsula.
My passion is helping and teaching others to use technology and make their lives better and simpler, even in small ways. I’m grateful to have helped a lot of people and a large number of large commercial customers.
I’m even more proud that I’ve also taught children to program, friends and family how to print and back up their photos, and published community articles explaining how to keep personal details secure.
Rather than continue working in the IT industry in Melbourne I’m delivering my experience to the local Peninsula community by offering affordable, high quality, IT consulting services. You can see more details in the services page.
I approach my IT projects with four core principles:
- Efficiency: Solve the problem that needs solving with the best possible solution within the constraints.
- Frugality: Reduce the resources needed to get the job done, it’s good for the customers pocket, and the planet.
- An eye on future: Everything will change, so I do my best make sure decisions and choices made today don’t paint you into a corner tomorrow.
- Always Behave Ethically
My Personal IT Domestic Setup
Recently I’ve been adding new network and home automation devices to our house. The house came with TV cabling in most rooms, so I’ve been able to provide reliable high speed network connections and Wi-Fi throughout the house.
Day to day I use an Android phone, a Chrome OS tablet which can pretend to be a fully featured laptop as well as an Android tablet, and a MacBook Air hand-me-down laptop for “serious” work. I also have a number of tiny computers running Linux around the house (one of them supports my printer for instance). I even have an old Windows 10 device for testing.
